While we were more of a Bosco family, we did keep Cocoa Marsh as well. Mighty Joe Young was my MDM favorite, and I was amazed to find out when watching Gone With the Wind for the first time where that movie theme song was from!
But first, a big thank you for providing the correct name for that chocolate drink mix. I remembered it as "Cocoa Marshall" and no one I knew remembered it. (No wonder!) You can get a used jar on eBay for only $1,800!
As far as movies, we leaned toward monster movies ("Godzilla", "King Kong", "Gorgo") and any number of old WWII movies.
In terms of making it much easier to see a movie no longer in theaters, it was as close to streaming as we'd get for a decades. It would be really hard for a younger person to understand.
...and all the kids who used to watch "Million Dollar Movie" are probably now the ones introducing and programming many of the same classic flicks on TCM.
I saw Buck Privates more than once, but I don’t really remember the sequel. For my favorite A&C stuff, I had to go to Channel 11 for their TV series with the brilliant Sidney Fields.
The summer before my senior year of high school, I was fortunate to attend NC’s Governor’s School West in Winston-Salem. It was a six week residential enrichment program based around the theme of 20th Century avant garde …. David and Lisa was screened one night at a mandatory assembly. I think we all left wondering WTF had we just watched, but we knew it was important. And it’s haunted and informed me ever since. A great issue!
I wish we had something like Million Dollar Movie when I was growing up (Midwest, 1980s, no cable). Coincidentally, since you mentioned The Jolson Story, in about a month I will be posting an article about Scotty Beckett, who played Jolson as a boy in that movie.
Terrytoon Circus! Wow! Million Dollar Movie was my go-to show. A great walk down memory lane.
Yankee Doodle Dandy was a favorite-who knew James Cagney, who just last week was a gangster, could sing and dance?

Dear Mr. Steiner:
Wow, does this bring back memories.

Thanks for this blast from the past!

Thank you, Mr. B.

Wouldn’t surprise me a bit.
Million Dollar Movie continued in the 70’s, right? I seem to remember this. Of course my favorite memories were watching Bogie movies with my dad.
I recall watching lots of Buck Privates, Come Home w. Abbott and Costello.
I'm sure it didn't cost a million to make that one.

Remember when a million dollars bought you more the just the credits?
The glory days of Hollywood.
I have a bluray collection upstairs.

I vividly remember the "Million Dollar Movie."
Some of them were terrific.
Some of them were "fifty cent movies."
But they were all great fun.
I loved million dollar movie. Watched it every time it was on. Thanks for the memories.

I look forward to reading the article!
